Discussion 6 by Sam Mo_(Instructor) - Sunday, 18 July 2021, 1:43 PM
Assess how the enteric nervous system supports the digestive system. What might occur that could result in the autonomic nervous system having a negative impact on digestion? Demonstrate your understanding of the material presented in Chapter 23 by correctly defining and using at least 4 anatomic and/or physiologic terms related to the structural and/or functional organization of the human digestive system as related to the clinical scenario you introduce to your readers.
Your discussion must be at least 250 words in length, detailing your thoughts and position using 2 references from the readings fo support. Also be sure to pose 1-2 well thought out questions from which your colleagues can formulate a response or generate further discussion. Be sure to cite any references using APA format.

The enteric nervous system plays a major role in supporting the digesting system by providing it with digestive juices such as saliva and stomach acid (Furness, 2007). The enteric nervous system is supporting the whole gastrointestinal tract, in controlling gut movement, blood flow, and nutrition exchange. As Furness (2007) states, "The enteric nervous system is composed of thousands of small ganglia that lie within the walls of the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary tree, the nerve fibers that connect these ganglia, and nerve fibers that supply the muscle of the gut wall, the mucosal epithelium, arterioles and other effector tissues" (para. 3).
Due to its wide variety of involved organs and influences on our body, we can see that there are many possible ways to have a

negative impact on our digestion. For this week's assignment, I lactose intolerance which is a form of food intolerance Affected people cannot tolerate milk sugar (lactose) or only in small quantities. The reason for this is a lactase enzyme deficiency, and since milk sugar (lactose) is a natural component of milk and dairy products, as well as being added to various other foods they have problems digesting it (West, 2017). It is a double sugar, a disaccharide, which as such cannot be absorbed by the mucous membrane of the small intestine (Priefer & Robels, 2020). To do this, it must first be broken down into its two components such as the individual sugars galactose and glucose, these can then pass through the intestinal wall (NHS, 2020).
The enzyme lactase is necessary for the breakdown o
