The Impact of Dietary Choices on Health and Disease

The choices of food we make each day has a significant impact on our health. The definition of what constitutes a healthy diet keeps on changing, by understanding the roles different foods, its nutrients, and other food components play in health and disease. However, an additional way to attain and maintain it and in addition to knowing when to switch diets and exercise is necessary. The Dietary Guidelines provides advice on what to eat and drink to meet nutrient needs, promote health, and prevent disease. And dietary changes include balancing energy intake, limiting saturated and trans-fat, limiting sugar and salt, shifting toward the consumption of unsaturated fat, increasing food and vegetables in our daily food intake (Cena and Calder, 2020). The dietary changes I would suggest promoting better nutritional health in my community is by educating them about a balanced diet. The lack of education regarding diet may be due to a lack of interest or incomplete understanding of how each nutrient influences health. Dietary choices contribute to the risk for developing diseases such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and inflammation, which in turn increase the risk for diseases that are associated with morbidity and mortality, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. A healthy diet is one in which nutrients are consumed in appropriate proportions to support energy without excess intake while also providing sufficient nutrients and hydration to meet the physiologic needs of the body.
