Introduction Health inequality, a pervasive and intricate concern impacting societies worldwide, remains a critical issue that manifests itself across diverse socio-economic landscapes. The exploration of health disparities unveils a tapestry of factors that contribute to inequitable health outcomes within and between nations. Within the scope of this unit, we have delved into the intricate web of causes underpinning these health inequalities. As we turn our focus to the Philippines, a nation grappling with its unique set of health challenges, this paper endeavors to unravel the intricacies of health disparities prevalent within its boundaries. Our aim is to illuminate and elucidate specific instances of unequal health outcomes prevalent in the country, drawing upon an extensive body of literature and scholarly works to unveil the multifaceted layers that shape these disparities. By meticulously dissecting these instances and exploring the root causes embedded within them, this study seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of health inequalities in the Philippines. Health Inequalities in the Philippines 1. Disparities in Maternal Mortality Rates: Maternal mortality rates in the Philippines exhibit significant disparities, particularly affecting marginalized populations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines is considerably higher among indigenous women or those from rural areas compared to urban dwellers. This inequality is rooted in various factors, including limited access to quality maternal health services, inadequate healthcare infrastructure in remote regions, and socioeconomic disparities. As discussed in Obrist et al. (2018), socioeconomic
status plays a pivotal role in determining access to maternal healthcare services, with impoverished women facing higher risks due to financial constraints and lack of education. 2. Regional Disparities in Access to Healthcare: The National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) reveals significant disparities in healthcare access across the Philippines, particularly in rural areas. These areas face challenges such as insufficient facilities, shortages in the healthcare workforce, and limited availability of essential medicines. These systemic shortcomings exacerbate existing health inequalities, particularly for marginalized communities in remote and underserved areas. The lack of healthcare infrastructure and resource allocation contributes to the perpetuation of health inequalities, leaving vulnerable populations at a disadvantage. Addressing these disparities requires a holistic approach, including targeted interventions to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, increase workforce capacity, and ensure consistent availability of essential medical supplies (Kruk et al., 2018). 3. Health Disparities among Ethnic Minorities: Ethnic minorities in the Philippines face significant health disparities, with elevated rates of morbidity and mortality compared to the general population. These disparities are exacerbated by cultural barriers, discriminatory practices, and geographical isolation. Cultural barriers shape attitudes towards healthcare-seeking behaviors, while discrimination exacerbates these disparities. Geographical isolation further complicates the situation, as remote regions lack sufficient healthcare infrastructure, leading to inadequate coverage and compromised health outcomes. To effectively address these health disparities, urgent interventions are needed to
