UNIV 10o1 - Written Assignment, Unit 2
1. Peer assessment is one of the learning methods in collaborative learning where students
have the responsibility to give feedbacks on each other's works in a way that would be
helpful for them to improve. The instructor is not usually involved with the peer
assessment apart from providing the assessment rubrics.
UoPeople uses that method because the practice of peer assessment involves thinking
critically on a topic (so that they can come up with feedbacks). Also, it prepares us for the
future work environments. We will have to be able to effectively communicate with each
other to get the best out of things and peer assessment is a great way to unlock that
mindset. Learning how to listen respectfully and respond constructively to such feedback,
as well as learning to craft and respectfully express such feedback to one's peers, is an
important skill in today's workplaces (UoPeople, 2020).
2. In traditional learning, we normally have to follow along what the instructor is teaching
to us and take notes on it. With peer assessment, students are put at a place to work
together collaboratively to gain knowledge (Souci, 2021). The main benefits we can get is
that we get to develop critical thinking skills and ways to effectively get your ideas across
to the other person; skills that are crucial in any field of work.
3. One of those common challenges to giving peer feedback is whether your judgement is
correct or not. On top of that, thoughts concerning if the person receiving the feedback
would accept your feedback or not can be disturbing and may even hinder your way of
giving helpful feedback. The next common worry students tend to have is whether their
feedbacks may be "too harsh", and because of that thought, they may be reluctant to point
out on things the other student completely missed. The solution to this is to detach from
those thoughts and know that you are just doing what's required and what's required is
that you have to give constructive feedback that should be helpful to the other student so,
in other words, it is not your responsibility when the other student feels agitated when
you're just trying to help.
4. Getting corrected by someone else can sometimes be a bit frustrating. On top of that
getting "corrected" on things you are not even wrong about in the first place is even more
frustrating. It is infuriating to say the least to read someone writing on how you have
done your written assignment poorly when in fact, they are the one who needs to be
corrected. With that being said, the most challenging things when receiving peer
assessment is dealing with wrong judgements, harsh words, and the combination of those
two. So, we have to remind ourselves not to take those kinds of feedbacks personally and
that the student probably means well.
5. My go to strategy on peer assessing written assignments is to be descriptive
