Immigration and Assimilation in America

Hello, for this assignment I chose "In Cuba I was a German shepherd" by Ana Menendez. Simply because the title of the story made me curious. The story is about Maximo and his friends coming to America as immigrants to start a new life here. Maximo thought that living in America could put him and his family in a better place. It turns out, life in America is not as good as they thought. They had to compromise on many things to live here, like dignity, professional identity, etc. I enjoy this story because it shows you the situation at the time in Cuba and the US. It shows you that the real world is cruel and not as easy as you think. Living in a better country like the US doesn't guarantee you a better life. It makes me think more about my life in the future. Hello, for this assignment, I choose Ana Menendez's "In Cuba I was a German Shepherd." Simply because the story's title piqued my interest. The story follows Maximo and his buddies as they embark on a new life in America as immigrants. Maximo believed that living in America would improve his and his family's situation. It turns out that life in America is not as idyllic as they had imagined. To live here, they had to give up a lot of things, like dignity, professional identity, and so on. This narrative is interesting to me because it depicts the situation in Cuba and the United States at the time. It demonstrates that the actual world is harsh and not as simple as you may believe. Living in a better country, such as the United States, does not ensure a better life. It encourages me to consider my future plans. "Maximo looked up, his eyes settling on Carlos, who looked at Antonio and then looked away." (Ana Menendez, 2002) "Maximo looked up, his gaze falling on Carlos, who exchanged a glance with Antonio before averting his gaze." (Ana Menendez, 2002) Menendez, A. (2002).
