The purpose of this learning journal is to discuss the similarities and the differences between
plant and animal cells during the cytokinesis stage of meiosis and mitosis. Cytokinesis is the
final stage of mitosis or meiosis in which the cytoplasm of a cell which divides and creates
two daughter cells from the one parent cell
Similarities
there are only four main similarities between plant and animal cytokinesis. both plant and
animal cytokinesis occur after the telophase open nuclear division (Difference Between,
(Difference Between, 2019). such a kinesis is the final stage in both plant and animal cells.
and, during cytokinesis, both cells will organise themselves into two separate cells which are
clones of the parent cell (Difference Between, 2019).
Differences
the differences, on the other hand, are plentiful. the first difference is that, in plants, the
cytoplasmic division is called plant cytokinesis and the cytoplasmic division of an animal cell
is called animal cytokinesis (Byjus, 2021). In plants, the cells are divided by creating a cell
plate, which is when the vesicles from the Golgi apparatus carry cell wall material to the
middle of the cell in order to form a plate from the sides to the middle of the mother cell
(Byjus, 2021). In animals, the cells are divided by forming a cleavage furrow, which is a
contractile ring formed in the middle by the actin and myosin, on both sides of the mother
cell (Byjus, 2021).
The direction of the division is also different in plant and animal cells. In plant cells, the cell
plate moves from the centre to the sides (Byjus, 2021). In animal cells, the cleavage furrow
grows from the sides to the centre (Byjus, 2021). In animal cells, the cell membrane is
pinched off into two daughter cells whereas this process does not happen in plant cells
(Byjus, 2021).
