Survey of Mass Communication

Hypodermic needle model (media & behavior: media politics & voting patterns) -prevailing idea that the media has a direct influence over our beliefs & behaviors...the arguments or ways notions are framed to us by media, it operates as hypo and directs them straight to our brain without giving us a chance to filter how/what comes in (automatically internalize those beliefs ourselves) -news media in general, like propaganda Uses & gratifications approach -Katz: relationship between different media forms and peoples behavior, people use diff media differently to fulfill diff needs. (ex: entertainment vs info collection) DARPA was Dept of Defense, funded research on internet to develop it for computer to computer info swapping to be more efficient, 1950s formed & began working on networks. McWorld & jihad -George Ritzer: theorized globalization = mcdonaldization -Ben Barber: agrees, adds to it...McWorld, forces of rationalization, idea of successful in 1 place and make them successful in other places --ALSO: local forces (jihad- value of local tradition), -Barber says globalization is a force of both things: GLOCALIZATION Social reality as a mediator of behavior --same day as mean world syndrome --we tend to gravitate towards media that affirms our world view (selective exposure) --as such, idea that media shapes our sense of reality, shapes our perception of reality. Heavy viewers of local news tend to perceive that crime rates much higher than they actually are: this then affects the way they behave (carry maize, etc) Stuart Hall's globalization --1: current era, era of global mass culture 1980's to present --idea of hybridity --slightly different era forms of TV --import/export --produced in one country, sold to another coproduction --countries split prod costs, airs in both
