Survey of Mass Communication

1. Model of Mediamaking (p. 4) -the media are themselves being made while they are simultaneously making something else. 2. Interpersonal media (p. 5) -used for point-to-point, person-to-person communication. -E.g. telephone/telegraph 3. Mass media (p. 5) -used for communication from a single point to a large number of points, or from a single source to an audience that includes many people -E.g. books, magazines, radio, broadcast 4. Network media (p. 5) -can be used as either interpersonal or mass media; used to create a new geography of social relations and connecting points. -E.g. fax, email, postal service 5. Technology (p. 7) -technology is the physical means of producing, reproducing, and distributing goods, services, materials, and cultural products 6. Institution (p. 7) functions, created by humans to perform an essential function for a society 7. Cultural form (p.8) -how the products of media technologies and organizations are structured, how their languages and meanings are structured into codes 8. Mediation (four senses (p. 9) -interceding or coming between (reconciliation or intercession) -that which has been mediated has been biased or shaped by the mediator and can be contrasted with immediate, objective information (the difference between the subject and the reality) -the space between the individual subject and reality, implies that our notion of reality is always shaped by experiences (the space of interpretation between the subject and the reality) -how messages are transmitted from one person to another (the connection that creates the circuit of the communication of meaning) 9. Transmission Model of Communication (p. 9-11) -source-message-receiver, identical to Transportation -assumes all communication operates like interpersonal communication 10. Cultural Model of Communication (p. 11-12) -sees communication as the construction of a shared space or map of meaning within which people coexist -people already exist within a world of shared meaning 11. Consensus model of society (p. 16-17) -emphasizes the unity and harmony within society and the ability of different peoples to get along together 12. Conflict model of society (p. 16-17) -emphasizes the conflicts and inequalities within social life and the difficulties different groups have in living together 1. As we begin our journey in studying mass media this semester, it's important to distinguish it from other categories of media. Briefly explain the key differences between mass media, interpersonal media, and network media. Mass media are the type of communication where it's from a single source to a large audience, whereas interpersonal media are communication between individuals that have more control over the information that's being communicated. The difference is the magnitude of the audience. Network media is used to describe the ways of transmitting information, such as telephone, the postal service and so on. It is considered to be used for both mass and interpersonal media. 2. Consider the Transmission Model of Communication as discussed in the reading and supplemental lecture. Come up with your own example of a situation in which the Transmission Model would be useful as a way to conceptualize mass communication, something other than the ones used
