Survey of Mass Communication

Core problematic -with any given narrative (movie, tv show, novel)-there is a central conflict that drives the action..refers to notion that the conflict is ultimately 2 opposing social values in conflict -the resolution/end = statement to which social value is preferable cultural-can be multi meaning, cultural dynamics, ideology apparent spontaneity-element of realism, in any representation, it doesn't look/sound too perfect. Trying to create notion that there is spontaneity happening (shaky camera use of available lighting, movement in background of frame, use of various sound techniques, 1)cinematography 2)editing-post-production, rearranging shots, angles 3)sound two-step flow model -idea that opinion leaders get information from mass media and then distribute that POV or info to mass audience. Media as fourth estate, agenda setting, priming Persuasion. Lazarsfeld -- opinion leaders In media res paratext example= looking up scriptwriters, etc, studio, after the movie you watch, then enhances understanding of it Information subsidies= press releases, video news releases, (subsidy=something is provided). FOR free market= allow consumers more power to watch they want to watch, so producers will make what consumers want to watch De regulate laws on ownership, more competition = more outlets, consumers have more choice Market populism Sign= Signifier + signified, or anything that conveys meaning Red light, to stop Man/hoodie/dark, danger/threat 30 rock = challenge to dominant ideology (challenge to notion that women aren't funny) identification doing ideological work = knocked up, encouraged to identify with Katherine heigl, spatial attachment, is morally preferable. Mother is depicted as shrew and annoying, encouraged to view her as antagonist--value judgement on her character 6 distinctive features of media spiral of silence- idea that some views (dominant ideology) become accepted as norm, but people who disagree tend to not speak up as often because fear that they cant change their mind--they don't think there are any others out there, spirals into silence=persuasive effect, magnify power of persuasion of an idea syntagmatic choice- what order the shots go in paradigmatic choice- deciding what shots to put in/use modernism to post modernism. Critics say we are in a sea of interpretations/symbols and it is leaving us isolated, empty alone, unmoored from real sense of world, comm tech and capital systems have lead to mass prod of culture that is not creative. Cultural items are devoid, all exactly the same and just to make money. Result is everyone is numb, mindless consumers consuming mass produced goods and that reinforces status quo. Hit-to-release ratio- a technique media industries use in response if you release 500 movies, chances of one being a hit is slim. But if engineered into putting a lot of money into maybe 10, if your number of hits is few but large, and there are many releases, the hits offset the rest of the releases where profit maybe low or neg (tent pole strategy) -textuality - idea that the images and representations and techniques will be studied of one single text (ex: analyzing sound, cinematography of Private Ryan = exercise in textuality) intertexuality (inherently related to other texts)..our
