Career Narrative in Community Psychology

Running Head: CAREER NARRATIVE CAREER NARRATIVE Student's Name Institutional Affiliation Date CAREER NARRATIVE I recently came to a final decision to pursue a degree in psychology for my career choice because I feel it is aligned with what I want to achieve in the future. I believe many aspects and experiences in my life are what led me to choose this career path. I can attribute both chance events (Bright and Pryor, 2005) and family influence (Schultheiss, 2003) as the main aspects leading to the choosing of this career path. My family's influence has been because of my father who I cherish and value for the work he does in the community. He studied sociology at the university then got a job as a community development worker in our home town. His positive impact on the disadvantaged in our society has influenced me to help others in the future, which is my main aim in taking up psychology as my career choice. Other factors are the previous jobs I have held in various organizations over my career. My first job was as a volunteer as an immigration officer at a foundation in the United Kingdom. which helped immigrants from war-torn or third world countries settle in the country. It also dealt with the integration of immigrants living in the country to government services and jobs in the country. My role included collecting and filing of legal documents for the immigrants and submitting them to the relevant offices for processing. I also went on the field sometimes to check up the conditions the immigrants were being subjected to and whether they were receiving the essential commodities for free before they became fully integrated into the country. I also helped in carrying out immigrants interviews to ascertain the real reason they moved into the country and if they had expertise or skills so that we could help them obtain jobs in the United Kingdom. I was tasked with keeping a day to day list of the people who visited the office to be able to follow up with their applications with the relevant departments. I took it upon myself to follow up on each case while contacting them incase their applications faced any setbacks. This CAREER NARRATIVE made me enjoy the job a lot as I was helping people who were desperate and with no other means of settling in the country. After that job, I was offered an internship at a center that cares for people living with disabilities, where I was placed in the autistic ward. Here I learned a lot about autistic people and the contrast with how society perceives them. It truly opened my eyes to how people living with autism should be treated. My day to day experiences at that ward was very useful in helping me deal with differences in the world of autistic people. As time went by, I was able to connect with most of them where their life experiences made me shed tears.
