Importance of Followership in Healthcare Leadership

Leadership is vital working within healthcare organizations. However, there are endless things that can go wrong if there is no structure within the workplace. "The concept of followership is important when accomplishing success within a group" (Medical Protection, 2013). To adopt followers of a set practice leaders must establish what makes their techniques unique. A previously research article provided by the Medical Protection Organization (MPO) expresses what the term followership means. This term can closely be defined as the ability to receive responsive interactions from people who are working within subordinate positions. It is further a "relationship between the leader, followers, and the group" (Medical Protection, 2013). So, what needs to happen for the two to work hand in hand? Followers must first take accountability in actions that influence companies in negative and positive ways. Such actions that are negative reflect poorly on an entire group, which brings me to my next point of followers who are willing to change what does not work. The article provides that many followers who are not actively engaged in the workplace will fail to use critical thinking capabilities. For the leadership aspect to work leaders much develop their own ways of thinking According to MPO leaders who tend to have the same mindsets as other prospective leaders may face issues of uncertainty and worse run into problems that could be avoided if choosing to think of alternative ideas. This article is important because it sets leadership and followership apart, the article provides ways to create workplace environments that welcome change, seek feedback. build working relationships, and share ideas in regard to increasing the success of a healthcare organization.
