EC1111 - International Economic Policy RHUL Vinay P. Nundlall Seminar 5 Question 1 What is the "cost of corruption"? Explain how corruption affects economic growth. Question 2 Corruption is a common feature across the world. However, various countries are differently affected by this problem. Go to the table from the Corruption Index 2016 Results on Transparency International's website at https://www.transparency.org/news/feature/corruption_perceptions_ind ex_2016#table Scroll and examine the rankings of countries. Explain any pattern that you detect among the top 10 cleanest countries and among the bottom 10 most corrupted countries. Question 3 Explain what is meant by 'State Capture'. 'Kleptocracy' is another related form of corruption: basing yourself on post World War II history, explain the concept and illustrate with examples. In what type of countries is kleptocracy more likely to occur? Question 4 - For debating in the Seminar Corruption can be fought through reforms that increase the costs of corruptible officials. However, this is more easily said than done. What types of reforms could reduce corruption? Further, are people who are on the supply side, i.e. those who are willing to pay bribes as responsible in causing corruption? 1
