Imagery and Memory: Overlapping Cognitive Processes

There seems to be some overlap between these cognitive faculties, and here you should consider the link between imagery and memory. First, describe the overlap between theoretical models from each domain (/4). Describe how processes in imagery could impact memory (/3) and how memory could impact imagery (/3). Finally, explain how you think brain injury that leads to imagery deficits might affect how a person would learn and remember a list of concrete words (/2). Describe the overlap between theoretical models from each domain (/4) The Method of Loci is an example of how imagery and memory overlap. Remembering a list of items, they imagine placing distinct objects in unexpected locations which results in the Von Restorff effect which leads to better memory. By creating a relationship between imagery and memory they're able to commit it to memory better. Another model is flashbulb memories. Schmolk and Squire's study in 2000, asked participants their location when they heard the verdict for the O.J Simpson trial. One participant remembered being at a bar but when asked 32 months later, she was convinced she was at home when she heard the news. This showed that their memories were distorted because their vividness of mental images had changed. Describe how processes in imagery could impact memory Processes in imagery can compensate for memory. Highben and Palmer's study in 2004, showed how imagery can compensate for lack of feedback. High auditory imagers outperformed low imagers by using their auditory imagery ability to remember the piece of music with no auditory feedback. How memory could impact imagery Retrieving a memory, might be influenced by schemas, which can alter how people imagine what objects look like. For example, an artist asked people to draw a bike, details were missing because their memories had changed which affected their mental image of a bike.
