Course Description and Objectives: Cognition is the scientific study of mind and thought. It is a detailed examination of the mental processes that are involved in everyday human behaviour. In this course, you will learn the philosophical issues, empirical studies and theoretical models of how we perceive, manipulate and interpret the information that surrounds us. Topics covered will include: perception, attention, working memory, long-term memory, skill acquisition, problem solving, language and consciousness. Course Pre-Requisite: A course in Introductory Psychology or Perception. Knowledge of basic principles of Psychology is required. Although you are able to register for this course without these pre-requisites, you do so at your own risk. Required Text: Cognition: 10th Edition, by Thomas A. Farmer, Margaret W. Matlin FARMER . MARGARET W. MATLIN COGNITION WILEY The edition of the text used in this course is the 10th edition. If we reference page or figure numbers in course materials, this is the edition being referenced. If you choose to use an earlier edition, while much of the information may be the same, it is your responsibility to identify any discrepancies between your version and the official edition used in this course. Course Website: All course announcements will be posted on the myCourses website. You should make sure to check this website daily in order to keep up with the course material. Questions and TA Help: You are encouraged to use the Ask the Instructor discussion boards on myCourses to ask any questions about the course material. Because often many students have the same questions, by posting on the discussion boards first, you will be able to help each other out in understanding the material. It will also give us a good idea of which areas students are having trouble with. There will be a separate discussion board set up for each lecture.
