PSYC 307 003 With Professor Cheung Lecture 10: How Culture Develops Sleeping Baby · Co-Sleeping is very controversial and much more controversial than sleep duration · Co-Sleeping generally in studies are babies co-sleeping with their parents in their bed. o It promotes breast feeding during the night which provides comfort and brain development. · There are people who do not think the idea of co-sleeping is a good idea in terms of how dangerous it can be. o People argue that co-sleeping leads to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It's the cause of death that would be noted if an infant dies for no apparent reason and there's no trauma or obvious reason. · People argue that co-sleeping leads to higher instances of SIDS. Co-Sleeping- The Hidden Danger? · Evidence for dangers of co-sleeping: o Majority of sudden and unexpected infant deaths during sleep occurred outside of crib (the implication that babies sleep in cribs) o Bed-sharing is associated with 5-times higher likelihood of SIDS o Co-sleeping may be associated with thermal stress, airway obstruction, or rebreathing of parental expired air. " Babies might overheat which causes SIDS or parents might roll over onto their child. " As parents breathe out carbon dioxide and that's what babies breathe in so it could lead to death. · Evidence against the dangers of co-sleeping o As co-sleeping has increased significantly over time, SIDS deaths in the parental bed have significantly decreased o Risk factor does not equal cause-association of co-sleeping and SIDS most commonly found in conjunction with other factors · Co-sleeping is associated with SIDS when it's done in conjunction of substance use. · If the parents are using alcohol or narcotics in bed, they get in a state of unresponsiveness so when they fall into a sleep-like state, they're so not aware of their surroundings that they can roll over on their infants. · It's usually not a problem if parents aren't drunk or high. o Cultures that do more co-sleeping actually have fewer SIDS cases than cultures that do less co- sleeping SIDS Rates (1995) per 1000 Live Births in Relationship to Percent Bedsharing SIDS Rates (1995) Per 1000 Live Births In Relationship to Percent Bedsharing 100% 1 00 90% · The X-axis are a bunch of different locations (cities, provinces) 70% . The lilac colour corresponds to the Y-axis on the left which is how much bedsharing is done in that region. 60 Percent bedsharing . The burgundy bar is on the right of the Y-axis which is the SIDS rates per live births Scegli under Scotland stel Cupentage Hong Kong (STAR China) . The less bedsharing is done, the more frequency of SIDS seems to be. · With less bed sharing, we see more SIDS. · It's not causal, but it speaks against the idea that bedsharing causes SIDS 1.00 SIDS per 1000 live births Dublin Florence/ Naples Hannover (Ge) Durede pg) Hong Kong Caucasian Buenos Aires (ARG)
