Physics 170 Mechanics I Course Overview

PHYSICS 170 MECHANICS I SECTION 101 (2021 W1) GENERAL INFORMATION Welcome to Physics 170! This document (or syllabus) lays out the administrative parts of the course. Lectures will focus on studying and practicing Physics so I will not discuss the administrative issues much. This document will be updated regularly to be a one stop resource for all the different aspects of the course (for example the software required and how to use it). The course will be administered through Canvas. You will find complete information about the course there, including announcements, lecture notes and recordings, your tutorial and mid-term grades (as they become available) and more. I recommend that you configure your Canvas settings so that you receive an e-mail whenever an announcement is posted. Do this by selecting Account -> Notifications from your Canvas dashboard, then in the Course Activities section, set the Announcement setting to "Notify me right away". Please note that you are responsible for being aware of the content of announcements. Lectures Lectures will take place 2:00 to 2:50 PM, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, in Hebb 100. The lectures will be streamed on Zoom: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/8937113276 (Meeting ID: 893 711 3276). Password: 85170 Though it will be a one-sided broadcast, I will not be able to monitor questions on Zoom. Lecture recording will be available to students on the Canvas website. Covid-19 Safety This is addressed in a separate document, to be found on Canvas. As the situation changes I will try to keep it updated. Hibbeler, Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics. Prentice-Hall Publishing Company, Third Custom Edition (of the 14th edition). Available (including electronic editions) from the UBC Bookstore. The textbook is required, though previous editions will do. You will also need to purchase access to Mastering Engineering (ME), which is the way the homework will be managed. ME is an online homework system which is described in more detail in the document "Information About Mastering Engineering" available on Canvas. The UBC bookstore bundles the 3rd custom edition of the text with an ME access code. Buying the bundle will also give you access to an online version of the text. Another option is to purchase a used copy of the 3rd custom edition, or an older edition (2nd custom edition, or 10th /11th/12th/13th edition of the full text will be fine) and then buy the ME access code separately. Note that this will not provide you with access to the online text. Note that your Mastering Engineering grades will not be posted on Canvas, but you will be able to view those on the homework site itself. Additional information concerning the registration process is available in the "Information About
