Social Determinants of health - income - social environment - physical environment - culture Social Environment - quality of social networks that we have and the number of social networks that we have · makes us feel happier and safer · healthier social environments comes from volunteering Income - Provides access to medicine and nutrition - better sense of control Physical environment - Natural or built environments · rivers and parks · warmth, mould, earthquake safety Culture - influences what opportunities you get - treatment you get from others - risk to different factors Land acknowledgement traditional = territory where the musqueum people have engaged in traditional and cultural behaviours Ancestral = been on this land for a long time Unceded = did not pass hands through treaty or consent Indian residential school system 1 - assimilate indigenous children and eradicate and replace it with anglo-canadian culture - schools built far away - banned indigenous language and practice amongst children - First school opened in the 1880s -> modelled after the american system "to kill the indian within the child" . by 1920s all indigenous children must attend residential school . the last residential school was closed in 1996 in Saskatchewan - Issues · abuse, disease, poor sanitation - estimates 24% of indigenous children died in residential school - over 50% of children sent home died shortly after Understanding health - Indigenous people Inuit - happiness means · family and kinship · talking and communication - talking -> positive emotional outcomes - not -talking -> negative emotional outcomes · engaging in traditional knowledge and practices - unhappiness is not being with parents Income and indigenous groups - there is about a 10000 dollar gap in income between non-indigenous and indige- nous populations - employment rate is always lower for indigenous groups · discrimination · seasonal jobs . lack of education - Low employability · lack of trust in educational programs - cost of living · quite high in first nations reserves compared to vancouver · large gap between income though - vancouver makes more Physical environment on indigenous health - almost 20% of communities have drinking water advisories · boiled water advisories . do not consume advisories · do not use advisories - Therapeutic landscapes 2 · going out to collect medicines, going to sweat lodges, connecting with the cre- ator fi
