PSYC 307 Lecture 27 attraction different types of predictors with different universality and cultural variability teeth -japan- 2 front teeth more prominent, canines pushed in aspects of predictors universal -have to do with evolutionary explanations surrounding survival instincts, etc -normal development- not effected by disrupted pathogens -we are unremarkable, only 4 limbs etc -when exposed to illnesses in the womb, might disrupt how we develop -shows up in various aspects of visible experience eg-skin-most visible aspect-can communicate experience/history of illnesses-on avg people rate clear skin as more attractive -these are things correlated to perceptions of attraction -media industry has picked up on this-photo editing of shows, commercials to make skin look flawless and smooth -beauty industry based on making people think they have improved skin -products solely dedicated to give clear skin -issue of bilateral symmetry -supposed to indicate normal, uninterrupted development, not exposed to illnesses, pathogens etc -when 1 side looks different from other, communicates some level of history of exposure to pathogens, outcome of mutations personality predictors -certain traits that predict higher attractiveness >emotional stability >dependability >kindness >intelligence -four of big five (extraversion missing) -first 2 most consistent
attraction aspects of predictor- 1)similarity attraction effect -idea that people whom we find attractive tend to be people who are similar to us, especially things that we find important e.g. life goals, politics, religion the more important, the more the similarity will predict attraction -most prominent on people with higher independent self-construal -being with someone who is similar reflects back at us interdependent- less motivation to engage in self enhancement 2) propinquinty effect -we form relationships with people with whom we interact more, people we see more -mere exposure effect- more exposure to certain stimulus-more attraction to it, more you tend to like it -works with things towards which you have neutral or positive perception -independent self-construal average faces -faces largely deviant from avg faces seen as less attractive -eurasian faces as healthiest? -genetic fitness- -when there is more heterozygosity- more resistence to infections, more survivability =associated with more attractiveness e.g. fair complexion, bilateral similarity, average faces cultural variables e.g. tanned skin, muscles, hooded eyelids extreme example- length of neck -necks not getting longer, rings are heavy they end up pressing down on collar bones -illusion that necks are longer
