November 15th 2018 Soci 217 Qualitative Interviewing In depth interviewing: Differences from Survey Interviews · Fewer cases/ smaller number of cases o Not representative data o · Non-representative, purposive/theoretical o THIS is not the purpose-> we want DEPTH . In-depth interviews = conversations with a purpose - to gather information Can pursue issues that may have not been anticipated o The same, standardized questions may not be asked to every respondent o Enables us to pursue issues in greater depth ... · Saturation ... o Nothing left to learn o The topic is completely exhausted . Why would we use in-depth interviewing? o When we want to fit pieces together/ big picture view o When we want to figure out the important variables for when we move onto quantitative research . . Never ask a question that can be answered with yes or no Approaches to Interviewing · Miner (from Kvale) o The assumption that the subject possesses specific information and that the interviewer's job is to dig it out. · Traveler (From Kvale) o Researcher wanders through the landscape and enters into conversations with the people encountered; explores the many domains. o The interviewer wanders along with the local inhabitants, asks questions that lead the subjects to tell their own stories of their lived world. A journey you are taking together, you let the subject guide the path through the mind o Asking further questions . Structured > not usually qualitative o Standardized questions o No deviations from question order Question wording asked exactly as written o No clarifications o No additional questions may be added . Semi Structured -> qualitative o Standardized questions suggested but may be altered o Questions may be reordered o Wording is flexible November 15th 2018 Soci 217 Level of language may be adjusted o Interviewer may make clarifications o Questions and probes may be added or deleted · Unstructured -> qualitative o Completely unstandardized o No set order to any questions . No set wording to any questions o Interviewer may make clarifications Stages of Qualitative Depth Interviewing · 1. Thematizing > purposes and concepts · 2. Designing > the process . 3. Interviewing-> the actual interview · 4. Transcribing-> creating a written text Listen to every second of the tape, put in clues (smiling), pauses, coughs, hmms etc. . 5. Analyzing > meaning of the materials as they relate to the purpose . 6. Verifying > checking the reliability and validity of the material o Go back through the transcript and double check that it is correct Make sure you put the right meaning in it · 7.
