Analyzing Hypotheses and Controls in Experimental Research

Individual Article Review #2 Let's continue our work identifying study hypotheses as well as operational definitions of independent and dependent variables in a study. For this article note that the researchers can test several hypothesized relationships between one IV and multiple DVs. Let's also start thinking about how and why researchers employ different controls over their experimental designs. The experimenters in this article use a number of different control procedures to ensure that they minimize the effect of some extraneous (or 'noise') variables. Locate and read the following article: Axelsson, J., Sundelin, T., Ingre, M., Van Someren, E. J. W., Olsson, A., & Lekander, M. (2010). Beauty sleep: Experimental study on the perceived health and attractiveness of sleep deprived people. BMJ, 341, 6614. Respond to the following points using a blue font (so that I can easily see your responses): 1. First, briefly describe the steps you took to locate this article. (know that you can say anything including 'a friend sent it to me'; I actually just want to learn how you are getting these articles!) I searched for this article on the UBC library website. 2. The researchers use a bit of folk wisdom to justify their research programme, what is the common expression associated with this folk wisdom? Do you think this is a good or bad justification for research? Why? Folk wisdom is often a recurring belief in society that people believe to be true. And even though within the scientific community, when people base their information on this method, I believe folk wisdom is a good indication of how society thinks about it (maybe it describes the culture or what people find important). In the case of "beauty sleep", it has been something that's talked about again and again within popular media and in some aspects, sleep has been deemed important because of attractiveness. And when we hear about these folk wisdoms which may be of importance or talked about frequently, it allows researchers to deep-dive into why this is important to people and if there is any validity to the claim. 3. State the researcher's hypotheses for this line of research in your own words. (Note that each IV~DV relationship should have its own hypothesis) Researchers hypothesized that untrained observers would perceive sleep deprived people are more tired, less healthy, less attractive compared with after a normal night's sleep. 4. State the operational definition of the independent variable(s) including each level of the IV(s), please be specific: The independent variable for the first condition (normal sleep condition)was having a good night sleep(8 hours) and for the 2nd condition a bad night sleep (5 hours ). They were then told to confirm sleep times with sleep diaries and text messages. For the next independent variable, were the photos taken of the participants and shown to the observers with a fixed time and in randomized order. 5.
