SOCI 380 SOCI 380: Final Project Report I. Study Importance: Introduction and Prior Research While it is known that mental illness knows no bounds when it comes to gender. You can be affected whether you are male, female, or a part of the LGBTQ2+ community. However, it is also true that certain genders are more susceptible to mental illnesses than others. There are various factors as to why this may be. Some factors include discrimination, negative societal views, and inequality. It is crucial to understand who is vulnerable so that we can find ways to help. Based on statistics Canada, a higher percentage of males claim to have excellent or very good mental health compared to females (Statistics Canada, 2021). Furthermore, females are more likely to rate their mental health lower than males. Research Question: What is the relationship between gender and mental health? II. Data & Methods Sample · We use non-probability sample (convenience sample) of the W22 T1 SOCI 380 class with Dr. Huyser as our study participants. · Since our study is a non-probability study, our findings are not generalizable to any population beyond our study respondents. Measurement · Our survey has adapted questions from Canada's General Social Survey (GSS). o The GSS program was established in 1985 and was designed as a series of independent, annual, voluntary, cross-sectional surveys, each covering one topic in-depth. The overall objectives of the program were, and continue to be, to gather data on social trends in order to monitor changes in the living conditions and well-being of Canadians, and to provide information on specific social policy issues. 1. In general, would you say your mental health is ...? · Excellent · Very good • Good · Fair • Poor · Prefer not to say • Unsure The question above remained unchanged when brought over from the GSS dataset. This question is important, because it helps us understand the mental health of the respondents in relation to gender. It asks respondents: "Does stresses impact your mental health."
Data Collection . We used the UBC Survey Tool that is provided by Qualtrics to disseminate the survey among the W22 T1 SOCI 380 class. It is an easy-to-use, top-tier survey tool platform that offers a wide range of features. It also complies with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act because the survey data is kept secure and is stored and backed up in Canada. · Survey responses were collected through an anonymous weblink to protect the identities of our respondents. Analysis · We used Qualtrics report feature and Microsoft Excel to produce descriptive statistic results for the report. · We also used summary statistics from the Canadian GSS 2017 and Census 2016 to provide a description of the national response profile. · No additional analysis was performed.
