Page 1 of 10 Semester Two Mid-Semester Examinations, 2015 STAT1201/1301 Analysis of Scientific Data (Internal Only) Question 1 You are a member of a University ethics committee, and the following proposed study is submitted for approval. Researchers intend to test whether pumpkin juice can reduce the harmful effects of ionising radiation in fruit flies. They intend to raise 100 fruit flies which will be divided into two groups, one given access to standard fruit fly feed (grain meal) and one given access to both grain meal and pumpkin juice. They will both be housed in boxes with a chunk of Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope that emits beta and gamma radiation. After ten days the researchers will count the number of surviving fruit flies in each box to see if there is a significant difference in survival rate. Survivors will be ground up for spectroscopic analysis to determine what chemical differences exist between surviving and non-surviving fruit flies. List four important ethical concerns about this proposal in the spaces below. [8 marks] i. ii. iii. 1V.
