Week 11 - Wh Questions Tuesday, November 13, 2018 3:56 PM - Wh questions question a particular place/time/person in a sentence - Characterized by a different word order - The word order arises from Wh Movement - Wh words are considered a determiner in a noun phrase. - Wh movement involves moving Wh from the compliment of VP to the specifier of CP. Why move from there? - The Wh is considered the object or subject of the predicate. Ex Who has seen Felix? W Which movie did John see? Which movie is the object of see. What triggers Wh Movement - Question material must be interpreted in CP - Sentences are marked as questions by [+Q] feature in the head of CP. Wh phrases mu checking (agreement) relation with [+Q] - Pied Piping - When the object of a preposition undergoes Wh Movement, it can carry along its PP Ex In which bag did Jill carry her tools? Stranding - The Wh can also leave the prepositional phrase when it moves. Ex Which bag did Jill carry her tools in? Indirect Wh Questions - Restrict the content of CP. They can only have one constituent in CP. - CP likes to have question in either the specifier or the head, but not both.
