ONLINE SWIN BUR * NE ¥ What is the denotative meaning of your chosen text? What are some connotative meanings in this text? O'Shaughnessy, Stadler and Casey (2016) share that all media text holds a mixture of signs that are linked with each other to then show meaning and significance. This statement also reflects on semiology, which is the interpretation and study of signs and symbols. Signs that are shown within media text contain both denotations and connotations. Firstly, Barthes (2020) refers to denotation and is the first specific and more obvious meaning of the media text or more of the literal meaning. Secondly O'Shaughnessy, Stadler and Casey (2016) explore that connotation is the second tier and the sign that explores feelings, emotions, ideas inferred and furthermore turning to our shared cultures codes. Shown in this text the denotation is that there is a man standing in the rain soaking wet while holding an umbrella over a woman who is dry from the rain. The weather and the darkness denotes that the meeting between the two people is outside and during the evening. There are also various connotations linked to the above denotations such as what the two people are wearing. Their clothing suggests that they are high class and attending a black-tie event. This dressing might also suggest that they are both successful people, typically the man as the media text is based around 'gentleman only'. The position of the women under the umbrella and the man standing in the rain getting wet from the rain suggests that the man is showing gentlemen signs, such as chivalry. 2 | Page
SWIN BUR * NE ONLINE Identify and discuss any intertextual links between the text and other media texts. Intertextuality shows that media doesn't work alone. Media texts communicate to each other as much as they communicate with their audience. This is a relationship between texts, and between texts and audiences and we describe this relationship as dialogic and as intertextual. Julia Kristeva is a feminist theorist with her own theory of intertextuality. Julia states and argued that texts have two axes, firstly a horizontal axis that is connects the author of the text with their audience and secondly a vertical axis that connects the text to other texts. Julia encourages audiences to engage with the media and consume through address and interpellation (Kristeva 1986). Intertextuality in my above selected media text is not direct and obvious although it is suggesting that chivalry and been a gentleman is linked with this media text. It is saying that women do not necessarily need to get wet from the weather when they have a gentleman to shelter them from the rain. Does it have captions that
