Management Theories and Organizational Design

INTRODUC TION TO MANAGEM ENT Codie Richard is a manager of two Ford Dealerships and deals with employees from all levels. In this essay it will break down theories which relate to her management style, and help the manager improve in those areas. This will include organisational structure, organisational design, contingency model of leadership and types of control. The purpose of this essay is to implement these theories into her current workplace, seeing how they could be applied and further developed to improve her organisation. Each sections clearly justify why these theories are best suited to Codie and her workplace and the ways in which it will improve many aspects. Organisation structure refers to the formal arrangement of jobs within an organisation. In my case study, the manager focuses on having a clear chain of command to ensure all tasks are done and any questions that need to be asked are able to be solved by going to the right person. To have a chain of command, there must be people with authority in place which could either be line authority or staff authority. Line authority gives a manager the ability to tell an employee what to do whereas staff authority are people who support, assist and give advice to those holding line authority. Clear implementation of chain of command could improve the burden of tasks which directly affect Codie's work. Codie must be able to manage not only the individual staff, but holds the responsibility of the finance department, accounting and billing and service department. By delegating managers that have staff authority, Codie will be able to better manage her teams, and can then ensure each section of her business is correctly being managed. She will still be able to control these sectors, but will have people working on a particular area in each section and managing them which will take the burden off Codie. Codie must then make sure all employees know who to report to, being only their individual manager. With each staff member reporting to their individual staff member, to ensure there is no confusion. In a case study of reporting to necessary people a Dr Ashley mentions "staff members should be aware of how the reporting process works in their own facility", (A, 2019) she found it vital in her experience to know this chain and report by it. By having a clear organisational design, Codie's work will improve in their roles and their levels of authority. Organisation design becomes a big part of many companies and is essentially what will make or break many. There are many types of ways an organisation can design their company; either but having mechanistic or an organic organisation. (Brophy, 2019). Mechanistic structures rely on rules and regulations to ensure everyone is adhering to their job description and can also be very impersonal as there is no clear communication from top and lower level workers. Contrastingly organic organisation is loose and flexible, with less formal rules and supervision, giving
