Effective Communication Strategies in Healthcare Management

Good morning, Welcome to Joondalup Hospital. My name is Jazmin Ohl. Today I'm here to talk to you about my role working as a professional communicator at Joondalup Hospital. As a professional communicator at this organisation I am responsible for leading and delivering effective communication strategies to all departments within the organisation, including public relations, human resources and executives. The key role that I possess is the ability to lead and guide each department in their communication skills. It is essential that I am able to work collaboratively with colleagues. I possess a high level of written and verbal communicative skills, as it is essential that I am able to communicate to a professional standard. It is important that within my working role at Joondalup hospital, I consider the intended audience of my message, what is my intended key message and how will I deliver my intended message. As a professional communicator, I am expected to be able to adapt in order to deliver the message to a range of diverse audiences. Joondalup Hospital offers a wide range of differing services, so I will need to consider that I will be communicating with a large number of people, inclusive of all hospital staff, patients and the wider community. Joondalup hospital is a public hospital, which means I will be communicating regularly with individuals from all demographics - inclusive of varying age, gender, ethnicity and individuals with varying health concerns and mental states. Due to the broad range of individuals that I will be communicating with regularly, it is important that I am able to convey my intended message in varying ways. As a professional communicator at Joondalup Hospital I need to determine the appropriate communication channel to deliver my intended message. I can do this by identifying potential channels that effectively deliver my message to the intended audience, whether they are internal or external. It is essential that the channels I choose are familiar to the intended audience ensuring the message will be received. Some of the channels I may utilise is liaising with local media companies for press releases to the public, or for news articles to be released relating to news about the hospital that the public needs to be aware of. This release of information may be via television, newspaper or social media pages. Ideally, more than one channel would be utilised when communicating with our audience to ensure the message is received. The use of social media such as Facebook and twitter is a quick and efficient means of communication due to the increase in individual access to technology. Other communication channels utilised at Joondalup Hospital are events and informative seminars. This is to raise awareness within the local community. We also distribute newsletters and informative posters and pamphlets around the hospital that can be taken by individuals within our intended audience. For an internal audience we would place these on notice boards within offices, lunch and break rooms, and within employee lockers. For external audiences
