PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS ESSAY Unit Name & Code: Management 2030 - ORG10001
In this essay, I am going to explore my effectiveness as a team member, while I worked with my management class on completing the Team Effectiveness Report. I will use specific examples that occurred during this time and link them to management theory in order to explain and analyse my level of effectiveness. When we started working on the report, my effectiveness was generally good. I completed the tasks assigned to me on time such as, when I finished providing the incidents for Good Communication, I was then able to move on to providing the terms for Good Delegation. The reason I was able to accomplish this was because I had a clear plan, I attended the classes regularly and asked questions that clarified my understanding of the task activity. A plan is "a statement of intended means for accomplishing objectives" (Schermerhorn et al., 2014, p.181). Task activity is "an action taken by a team member that directly contributes to the group's performance purpose" (Schermerhorn, 2010, p. 329). Aside from that, I accepted responsibility for completing the tasks and, with the help of open book management since our manager made the individual reviews available to us, I was able to easily obtain all the information I needed for my part of the report. Responsibility is "the duty to perform the task or activity an employee or another stakeholder has been assigned" (Samson et al., 2017, p. 407). Open book management "is where managers provide employees with essential financial information about their companies" (Schermerhorn et al., 2014, p. 373). In preparing this report, I worked with other members of the team, and my effectiveness during that time was elevated. I communicated with another colleague over message to ensure we were on the same page before I started a specific task with them. Communication is "the process by which information is exchanged and understood by two or more people, usually with the intent to motivate or influence behaviour" (Samson et al. 2017, p. 705). By planning I was able to effective during this time such as when finding terms from Good Delegation, my colleague and I planned how we were going to gather them from the reviews and how many each was looking at. Planning is "the process of setting objectives and determining how to accomplish them" (Schermerhorn et al., 2014, p.178). Consequently, this helped us improve the quality of our work. Quality means "freedom from errors that require doing work over again" (Eldin, 2011, p. 3). And by ensuring we understood each other, I established relational coordination with my colleague and successfully
achieved the best outcome in our report. Relational coordination "refers to frequent horizontal coordination and communication carried out through ongoing relationships of shared goals, shared knowledge and mutual respect" (Samson et al., 2017, p. 434). Although we had a clear plan on reviewing the reports, initially, we did not plan on who was going to look at which
