Team Management and Dynamics

MGT10001 2.2 TEAM MANAGEMENT Types of team: · Departmental · Leadership · Self-directed work · Advisory Task force · Project team · Virtual teams The difference between a group and a team is that a team is usually focused on working together to achieve a common goal. Teams also have a formal structure suchlike a leader, designated roles and responsibilities for each member. ADVANTAGES OF USING A TEAM Increase customer satisfaction · Creating work teams that are trained to meet the needs of specific customers Improve products and service quality · When a product is reviewed by the buyer and is given a bad rating a team will be beneficial as they can discuss and work together to find different ways to improve their product based on the errors therefore once they remodel their product it is more likely that the customer will be satisfied. Improves employees' skills · Accomplished through cross training, in which employees are taught how to do all or most jobs performed by the other team members · . The advantage for the organisation is that cross-training allows a team to function normally when one member is absent, quits or is transferred · The advantage for employees is that cross-training broadens their skills and increases their capabilities, while also making their work more varied and interesting Employee satisfaction · Team members also gain job satisfaction from unique leadership responsibilities when working in teams that typically are not available in traditional organizations. For example, rotating leadership among team members can lead to more participation and cooperation in team decision making and improve team performance This diversity of viewpoints increases the odds that team decisions will solve the underlying causes of problems and not just address the symptoms. The increased knowledge and information available to teams also make it easier for them to generate more alternative solutions, which is a critical part of improving the quality of decisions. Because team members are involved in decision-making processes, they are also likely to be more committed to making those decisions work. In short, teams can do a much better job than individuals in two important steps of the decision-making process: defining the problem and generating alternative solutions. DISADVANTAGES OF USING A TEAM Hight turnover · Teams aren't for everyone, and when teams are introduced into a traditional work setting some employees baulk at the responsibility, effort and learning required in team settings. Social loafing ffbehavior in which team members withhold their efforts and fail to perform their share of the work . Team work is needed by everyone, therefore in some cases a few people might fail to put in the same amount of effort that another employee has done therefore making it unfair. Employee disagreements · When working in a team it requires multiple people to come to an agreement, therefore when one person is not satisfied with the plan it can spark arguments which can lead to a bad working environment/ chemistry between the employees. WHEN TO USE
