UO Introduction to Construction Management ASSESSMENT 1: CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT This assessment activity contributes to 50% of the total course grade. RATIONALE The aim of this assessment is to apply the theory that you have been learning to a building and construction project near you. It is beneficial to familiarise yourself with the relationship between the assessment and the course objectives as they are listed below. This activity is particularly focused on Course Objectives: CO3, CO4 and CO5. COURSE OBJECTIVES: - CO1. Outline the history, characteristics and external environment of the construction industry. - CO2. Identify the key principles of sustainable development and the role of sustainable construction. - CO3. Distinguish and explain the roles and interactions of sectors, professions, business entities, regulatory and advisory bodies involved in the industry. - CO4. Describe the building process and explain the roles, duties and relationships of the members of the building team. - CO5. Demonstrate an understanding of the key elements of management of construction organisations and projects. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION SELECTING YOUR PROJECT For Part A: My Project Goals and Part B: Construction Site Layout you need to select a building and construction project near you that meets the following characteristics: Ā· New building (not refurbished) residential or commercial. Ā· A project that is currently under construction (or approved for construction). 1
UO Introduction to Construction Management Ā· Minimum value: $10,000,000 AUD. Ā· A local building and construction project as you will need to conduct some observations. It is recommended that you select a building and construction project for which you can readily access general information about the project to meet all the requirements of Part A and B. Hence, before making your project selection please make sure you have read all the assessment requirements. For example, some information can be obtained directly through the builder or the architect. Online through the builder or architect's website, local government's website, and from local newspapers. Also, complement this information with site observations. It is important to note that you are NOT to enter the site. Instead, rely on your observations as you move around the outside of the site. Although you are not required to enter the site, you should be aware of individual site hazards that might be encountered.
