NE Aims and Objectives The aims of this learning object are to familiarise you with Referencing, Plagiarism and the Harvard System of referencing. By appropriately identifying words or ideas belonging to someone else by referencing their work through using the Harvard System, you avoid committing plagiarism, that is, cheating off someone else's work by claiming it as your own. The objectives of this learning object are: . to understand the Harvard System for citing and referencing within reports, essays, and assignments · to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. · to develop and understanding on how to reference other authors' material used in written assignment work by providing both in-text references and a list of references used · to understand the reasons for referencing Learning Content Overview. Learning at university may be different to the learning you did back at high school or the kind of learning you may have done in a TAFE or technical college. It is customary for university lecturers and tutors to not usually supply you with all the reading you need to complete your assignments. They expect you to research and read independently. You may read books, online journal articles or research on the web. This is called wide reading. When you write academic assignments, you must demonstrate your wide reading by citing ideas or concepts from this wide reading. Citations are academics' way of showing that they are using someone else's ideas, concepts, theories or actual words. While the direct coping of content with little to no use of references may not have been considered a major issue at high school, at a university level it is considered to be one of the most severe actions that a student can commit (intentionally).
