Debriefing Statement: Relationships between Sleep, Mood, Body Image Concerns and Suicidal Thoughts Principal Investigators: Prof Susan Rossell, Prof Denny Meyer, Dr Amy Malcolm IMPORTANT You will need to copy and paste the following debrief information into a separate Microsoft Word (or similar word processing software) document. You will need this information for your end-of-semester document which details the Independent Variables, Dependent Variables, and aims of the studies you participated in. DO NOT leave this page without copying and pasting the debrief information below, as you will not be able to access this page in the future. Debrief information: Previous research has identified links between poor sleep and vulnerability to suicidal thinking. This study sought to investigate these relationships in the context of body image concerns, with the purpose of helping us understand how these relationships could be relevant to people experiencing body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD is a mental health condition that involves a person becoming concerned by negative distortions in body image. People with BDD experience a very high risk of suicidal thinking. As such gaining a better understanding of relationships between sleep, body image and suicidal thinking may help provide insights to explain the high rates of suicidal ideation in BDD. As this study used a correlational, cross-sectional design, we did not manipulate any variables. This means there is no independent variable. Our dependant variables were sleep quality, body image concern, and suicidal thinking as these were the variables we measured.
Please do not talk to other potential participants (e.g., first year psychology students) about this study as we do not want the participants to know about the nature of the study in advance.
