2 ABSTRACT The use of remote work has become a significant element in the procurement and ongoing operation of enterprises when a face-to-face approach is unavailable, as current social- operational patterns of the COVID-19 virus become apparent. While remote learning can be greatly effective, the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of operations in highly situational and dynamic environments, such as the present pandemic, must be respected. This study aims to disseminate whether operations of management of team and individuals have and will continue to remain effective in both the educational and commercial environments, as well as where they have been most successfully implemented and maintained. Initially, the report consists of a juxtaposition of Information System (IS) managerial techniques in both individual and team applications of remote labour shall be addressed, with greater emphasis being placed on how the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) attributes affect the optimisation of effectiveness. In this sense, general observations are made by the use of references in order to correctly disseminate the artefacts required to produce the review. Secondly, investigation into the general effectiveness of operations will be assessed, as generally remote work operations are only partially effective, with technology being only 100 percent beneficial in situations where operations are totally streamlined and complimentary to the nature of business operations. This may be starkly contrasted to operations when onsite remote work is required, making the conversion even more difficult. The literature review concludes with the demonstration of future remote work plans and philosophies, drawing attention to how the future of the scheme will take place in a post- pandemic situation. 102106421-STEPHEN SAMARNIOTIS S2-2021
3 LITERATURE REVIEW INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Operational characteristics of not only businesses but that of academic medians have been severely affected throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (Bartik, 2020). Due to the constraints of COVID-19 regulations and laws, business and academic operations have been largely forced to implement strategies in order to continue to operate with general effectiveness whilst not on site, maintaining effective communication and procurement medians (Fairlie, 2020). The most efficient method of completing offsite operations is argued to undertake remote labour, wherein the parties work outside of a typical office setting, founding the mentality that work does not have to be completed in a certain location to be effective. It has further been argued that it is becoming increasingly clear during the recent lockdown periods, that IS managerial expertise is required to maximise the efficiency of workers. There is a plethora of literature concerning the dynamic shift of company operations from an office to an at-home environment, with motivations stemming from the strategic management theory. Notions of effectiveness of operations with respect to the current VUCA environmental factors prove the paramount subject of
