Question 1 - 20 Marks Consider the mechanism below. Ball Spring Ring T Shaft The mechanism is designed to protect shaft driven machinery from being overloaded with excessive torque. If the torque T applied through the shaft becomes too great, then the ball is pushed against the spring by the reaction force from the ring (which applies the output torque). Once the ball is clear of the ring, the shaft will rotate, but it will no longer be connected to the ring by the ball. The ring will then have no toque applied to it, and the machinery connected to the shaft will be protected from the excessive toque.
