Self-concept Perceptions " Individual self - personal traits " Relational self - relations with others ? Collective self - your contribution to the larger organisation o Complexity - the number of roles I identify with - father, husband, gym person Low complexity is where important identities are interconnected · Like a manager is accountant, family earner and mentor to employee o Consistency - " High consistency is where self-perceived roles are similar to personality traits, values and attributes · Mentor and manager ? Low consistency is where personal characteristics clash with characteristics of role . Strict focused accountant but also a wild party animal o Clarity - the degree which a person has a clearly defined and stable concept. " When you're confident about who I am " Can I describe my identity across time - if I can, this is high clarity. " Self-concept is clearer when consistency is higher . I identify as a strict accountant and a mentor for accounting People have better psychological wellbeing when they have multiple selves (complexity) that are well established (clarity) and are similar to each other and compatible to personal traits (Consistency) Self-concept protects our self-esteem when roles are threatened People with low complexity can suffer loss when they experience failure because they feel the events can affect a large part of themselves. People with high complexity are stronger as they only see failure in one role when others stay strong Low complexity people invest more time into work and have lower absenteeism as they have not many other outlets in life. - This also causes higher stress and depression when an important self- view is damaged and performance drops High clarity improves performance - good for leadership roles. Clarity focuses energy so employees can direct effort to career objectives. High clarity also have less interpersonal conflict. Very high clarity may have role inflexibility and they may not be good for adapting to change. High complexity · I might fail at accountant but I'm a great dad so depression is minimised Low complexity . If I fail at work that's all I have, this increases stress if a role is threatened. . But since I don't have many roles, I focus on those that I have, I do more hours and take less days off High Clarity · Focuses personal energy into career progression, great for leadership roles · I have less interpersonal conflict as I know and understand who I am Self Enhancement Inherent motivation to have a positive self-concept and have others see me favourably. When we have positive event, we say it caused by something we did When we have a negative event, it's something form the situation · I rate myself better than average and I try to make others see me better than average · I got great grades because I studied hard and I'm smart, so you see me as better · I got shit grades because the teacher marked it harder, so you still
