Data Governance and Strategy in Big Data Utilization

INF30004 BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE AND DATA VISUALISATION CONTINUOUS LEARNING ACTIVITIES #4&5 Name: Thi Yen Nhi Tran ID: 102415004 Question 1: Big data has considerably evolved in the last decade being used in government sectors as well in organization (Kubina et al., 2015). The big data is generally evolved from online sources such as email, websites, videos, blogs, posts and by sensors. Researchers claim that in the next upcoming decade, the amount of data extracted by these sources will increase by 50% (Kubina et al., 2015). However, there are many issues that comes along with the use of big data in companies such as information overload and accurate inception of the information. For this purpose, companies use data governance and data strategies to tackle the information collected through different sources. Data in organizations is treated as an enterprise asset (Marr, 2016). Majority of the companies worldwide decline since they are not able to control and certify the data collected through various sources which results in financial losses. Companies use IT to manage their structured and unstructured data from third parties (Shabbir & Gardezi, 2020). Companies need to include a holistic approach to focus on people, process and technology and justify the source of data collection and data quality (Cheong, 2007). To make sure that the data quality is optimum, companies use data governance methods. Researchers call data governance as the governance of people and governance of technology at the same time (Marr, 2016). Ethical issues such as safety of user data and ethical use of the data after taking permission from the user is a core value of data governance that has been ignored by many companies worldwide. This question will discuss the data governance and data strategy of Facebook. Facebook has been using big data to solve many issues. Since majority of the revenue collected by Facebook is through selling of products and services and by advertisements, Facebook has been using big data to target the right customers (Hewage et al., 2018). Facebook uses big data to track the customer preferences, pages they visit, comments they like to generate the data for advertisers to sell their products or services to those interested customers. After collecting the data, Facebook use that data to match with the advertiser companies that sell similar products or services. Further, apart from this, Facebook has also been involved in using the data from other companies and using it for personal means. Data has been used from Instagram and WhatsApp that Facebook has bought long time ago, to collect for data (Hewage et al., 2018). Data governance has not been rightly used in Facebook though it makes up the top layer of the data architecture (Shacklett, 2019). Facebook aimed to use data governance to create harmonization of data that filled up the database in order to create the digital nervous system that is connected with the company' revenue generation (Shacklett, 2019). Further, Facebook has been using data governance to monitor the quality of the data posted by users
