The Influence of Honour-Based Violence in the South Asian Community

The Programme of Research Working Title: The act of killing under the influence of honour based violence within the South Asian community Potential Supervisor: Ali Raza Javaid (optional) Aaron Winter Aims and Objectives of the project (maximum of 250 words): Honour based violence is the act of committing criminal acts in the justification of a person's community or family. Each year a large figure of the population in the UK are murdered at the hand of 'honour'. The unlawful acts of honour based violence has become a huge occurrence towards ethnic minorities especially in the South Asian community. This has also been portrayed and perceived through television and film. In a much recent TV documentary on BBC called 'Murdered by My father'. The show has grasped sensitive issues like forced marriages and sheds light on the issues that south Asian girls are facing in a day to day. The drama documentary was crafted by real life stories from help of a UK charity that helps to support survivors of forced marriages and likewise aided by the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Right Organisation, another charity for the Middle East and Afghan who also help defend these young women. The show achieved to showcase how honour based violence and related abuse is happening to the everyday girl to which explains how much of an everyday problem this is, although it happens behind closed doors. Honour based violence has always been a thing however even more than ever more and more stories are emerging and just now the floodgates are opening to the world. Therefore, this study aims to assess why honour is such an immense influence and motivation on to making individuals commit such heinous crimes by reviewing existing literature on honour crime.
