In 2016, the tourism industry worldwide generated over $7 trillion in revenue to the global economy with over 1 billion international arrivals globally (Statista, 2017). The industry is one of the fastest growing and developing in the world with several new tourist destinations emerging in recent years. Due to the enormous scale of this industry, there are undeniable impacts which come along with its success. Similar to how destinations vary from one another, the impacts within these destinations vary as well, making them difficult to assess. Because of these differences, it is crucial that each tourist destination develops a plan relevant to the destination in order to ensure that the impacts are taken care of properly and to be as sustainable as possible. Introduction As mentioned above, sustainability plans should vary from destination to destination. This report will aim to highlight exactly how these plans differ by focusing on two major North American cities; Toronto, Ontario and Los Angeles, California. The report will highlight key tourism statistics concerning each city before outlining similarities and differences in the strategies used by each destination. Toronto Toronto is the capital city of the Ontario province in Canada. It is the country's largest city and the fourth largest in North America. The city is one of the most culturally diverse in the world and has a population of 2.8 million people (Toronto, n.d.). Toronto attracts nearly 40 million annual visitors, 14.3 million of which are overnight guests, generating a total expenditure of $6.7 billion (Tourism Toronto, 2015, p.6). The city has several man-made attractions such as the CN tower and the Ontario Science Centre.
