The Accuracy of Eyewitness Testimony

EMSA - Research Diary Template (2019/20) A. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Please fill in the following information about you, and the study you took part in. Your full name and student ID: Kiera Murrell S5204590 Your personal tutor's name: Kevin Thomas Name of researcher running the experiment: Ellen Gaf Title of experiment: The Accuracy of Eyewitness Testimony Date of experiment: 18th February 2020 B. LEARNING FROM THE EXPERIMENT 1) How long did the study take to complete? The study took 60minutes to complete. 20 mins in a lab, watching a video. We were then sent an article to our emails which we had to read. The following evening we were then sent a questionnaire with questions about the video we had watched. 2) What type of equipment or materials were used and what data will be produced? A 1minute 30second video was used. As well as a short article and a questionnaire which used closed questions. Quantitative data will be produced. 3) What type of design was used and why was that chosen instead of alternatives? The design was a 2 x 2 between participants design producing quantitative data. To analyse the data, the researcher will use 2 anovas, one for the amount of questions answered correctly and one for if the weapon was correctly answered. This was chosen instead of alternatives because this design allowed the researcher to see the diference between the answers. 4) What was the main research question? The main research question was 'The accuracy of eyewitness testimonies'. The research question was looking at how eyewitnesses relay information when asked after a period of time about the event they had seen. 5) What relevance do you think this research question has to real world applications? This research question has a lot of relevance to the real world as it looks at how eyewitnesses may not always be a reliable source. It is looking at how eyewitness testimonies can sometimes be a subject of memory distortions and biases, especially if we are perhaps given leading information which could sway our memories to fit this information we have been given. 1 6) Write a brief procedure. In what ways do you think the researcher did or did not show professionalism during the testing? The researcher showed the upmost professionalism during the study. She was polite as we entered the lab and greeted us all. The researcher provided us with a consent form to sign, which was clearly read out to us and was explained to us to ensure we understood what we were signing. We were given an opportunity to ask any questions before the study and after. We were then emailed a debrief form after the study had finished. The researcher was professional in ensuring we were comfortable within the study and also after. Note: All sections within this document should be filled in. 2
