HCI - Lecture 11: Interactive Lecture with Duncan (Stop, Pause and Rewind) Part 1 Have you used any software and thought, this is rubbish, e.g. too complicated, documentation/help isn't very helpful, so basic it doesn't fulfil is purpose, doesn't meet your needs? Think about hardware, without the hardware there's no interaction People that interact with the hardware/software are not always thought about; some people simply prefer other things, e.g. apple vs windows, Xbox vs PlayStation Privacy with Certain Devices · Children's devices that were found to have cameras inside . Company at fault but at the end of the day they're usually thinking about money · User's responsibility in this case could be down to the parent; sometimes the child doesn't know what they're doing they're just using the device but maybe it's the parents responsibility to police this usage to prevent these breaches in security and privacy Security Issues . If someone owns a video camera how can they make the camera more secure · Money = security in company's eyes · Security can be lacking - developers can simply think that 'users are stupid' or maybe their software isn't user friendly enough to enable extra security · Also a feature that gets forgotten The Multidisciplinary Field of HCI Human-Computer Interaction Computer science Human factors engineering Cognitive science Interactive Design Part 2 Computer Science - (computing) particularly includes the programming side; need someone to build/program our systems/apps/software Cognitive Science - psychological perspective; involves social psychology as we want to feel happy with the systems we use and if they're not usable, that won't make us very happy, so we won't use them Human Factor Engineering - how we'll do certain things or interact with the system e.g. smart phones with projectors and projection keyboards to resolve risk of breaking screens/equipment and/or lack of space User Needs How the customer explained it How the Project Leader understood it How the project was documented How the Analyst designed it How the Programmer wrote it How the Business Consultant described it But what did the user need? And, did the customer actually get what they needed? What operations installed How the customer was billed How it was supported What the customer really needed Ergonomics & Human Factors Are Ergonomics and Human Factors the same thing? · Essentially yes, they are different terms with the same meaning So, what is Human Factors (HF)? · HF is about designing for people, wherever they interact with products, systems, or processes; The emphasis of Human Factors is: · To ensure that designs complement the strengths and abilities of people and minimise the effects of their limitations, rather than forcing them to adapt; · To understand and design for the variability represented in the population, spanning such attributes as age, size, strength, cognitive ability, prior experience, cultural expectations, and goals · To make them easier to use, safer, more comfortable, more efficient According to Preece (1994), HCI design should be: · User-centred and involve users as much
