The site was formally the setting for Bolton Community College which was cleared in 2011. The land is classed as brown field site. The developer is considering a mixed use development of semi detached and detached houses. The college consisted of a three storey building with a basement floor. The basement floor was approximately 2.5m deep, has been filled in with rubble from the demolished building. The ground below the basement floor level was mainly soft clay for 4.0m and then stiff gravel. 1. (a) In connection with the site, discuss the three phases of site Investigation, make reference to organisations you would approach for relevant information in relation to the site. (10 marks) (b) Recommend the most suitable type of foundation for the site and draw a section though your recommended foundation annotating all parts. (10 marks) Total 20 marks 2. (a) Explain with the aid of sketches how a cavity wall incorporating partial insulation is constructed describing all the component parts in relation to materials sizes, type and spacing. (10 marks) (b) Explain why it is necessary to provide lateral restrain to a wall. Using illustrations show the location where this should be provided. (a) Discuss two options that would be most suitable for the construction of a ground floor on the site. (10 marks) (b) Draw a section through one of the ground floor construction's described in (a) above providing annotation and sizes of components. (10 marks) Total 20 marks 4. Timber frame construction in England has approximately 25% of the market share compared with traditional brick and block which has 75% of market share.
