ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication STUDENT NAME MEDICATION morphine CATEGORY CLASs Opioid analgesic REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use Act on MU receptors, produces analgesia, respiratory depression, euphoria, and sedation, while also decreasing G.l. motility Release of moderate to severe pain, sedation, reduction of bowel motility, cough suppression Complications Medication Administration Constipation, respiratory depression less than 12 per minute, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, cough suppression, sedation, biliary colic, nausea and vomiting, opioid toxicity Assess pain level on regular basis, take baseline vital signs, follow controlled substance procedures, don't increase dose without consulting provider, for cancer patients administer around the clock Contraindications/Precautions Contra indications: biliary tract surgery, premature infants. Precautions: pregnancy, asthma, emphysema, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease Nursing Interventions Monitor vital signs, notify provider of less than 12 respirations a minute, have naloxone and resuscitation equipment available, administer stool softener/laxative, monitor intake and output Interactions CNS depressants, anti-cholinergic agents, antihypertensives Client Education Avoid use of opioids, alcohol, other CNS depressants, increased fluid and fiber intake and physical activity, change position slowly, avoid every four hours, avoid hazardous activities Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Relief of moderate to severe pain, cough suppression, resolution of diarrhea ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURE A7
