Expected Pharmacological Action
Therapeutic Use
Increase serum calcium levels rapidly
Hypocalcemia emergency situation, severe hyperkalemia
Complications Nausea, constipation, upset stomach, hypercalcemia, cardiac arrhythmias
Medication Administration
Assess pulse, blood pressure, bowel dilute in d5w and water and give as an infusion bolus
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypercalcemia, tissue necrosis, hypokalemia
Nursing Interventions
Observe patient closely for symptoms of hypocalcemia monitor blood pressure, pulse, and ECG frequently throughout, assess IV site for patency or irritation, monitor patients serum calcium levels
Interactions digoxin, calcium supplemets, phenytoin, calcium channel blockers
Client Education Avoid eating foods containing large amounts of oxalic acid, avoid taking calcium containing supplements, avoid tobacco or beverages containing caffeine or alcohol
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
decrease in serum potassium levels, increase in serum calcium levels
