Prevention and treatment of wound sepsis in patients with 2nd and 3rd degree burns Complications Medication Administration Exfoliative Dermatitis Steven- Johnson syndrome Toxic epidermal necrolysis Apply after cleansing and debriding of burn wound. Topical: Discard if white cream becomes dark. Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity - Infants <2 month - Pregnancy near term Nursing Interventions Assess burned tissue for infection and sepsis - Monitor for hypersensitivity Assess patient for skin rash frequently Interactions Topical proteolytic enzymes Client Education Explain purpose of medication to patient and family - Advise patient to promptly notify health care provider if a rash occures Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Prevention and treatment of infection in 2nd and 3rd degree burns and therapy is continued until the burn is healed or skin graft is performed.
