ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication STUDENT NAME MEDICATION Cefepime CATEGORY CLASs Fourth generation cephalosporins REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use Binds to the bacterial cell wall membrane causing cell death Treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms Complications Medication Administration - Encephalopathy - seizures - CDAD -Rashes - Pain at IM site or phlebitis at IV site Anaphylaxis - IM: reconstitute IM doses with sterile or bacteriostatic water for injection - IV: Monitor IV site for phlebitis at IV site. Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins Serious hypersensitivity to penicillins Caution if renal impairment - History of GI disease Nursing Interventions - Assess for infection: Vital signs, appearance of wound sputum, urine, and stool - Before administration obtain history of previous reactions to penicillin or cephalosporins - Observe patient for signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis - Monitor bowl function and signs and symptoms of CDAD Interactions - Probenecid -Loop diuretics Client Education Advise patient to report signs of superinfection and allergy - Report immediately to health care provider if a fever and diarrhea develop.
