REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER
PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Therapeutic Use Use is for patients who are hypokalemic and have symptoms of hypokalemia.
The exchange of sodium ions for ptassium ions to increase potassium levels.
Complications - Intestinal necrisis - Constipation - Impaction -Gastric irritation - Hypocalcemia - Sodium retention
Medication Administration PO administration: 1-4 times a day in water.Shake available suspension well before use. Add powder to water and shake well. Rectal administration: 30-50g of retention enema as needed every 6 hours
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindictated in patients with a history of fecal impaction, constipation, and/or previous bowel resections.
Nursing Interventions
Nurse will monitor for symptoms of hyperkalemia. Nurse will ascultate lungs periodically. Nurse will monitor ECG Nurse will monitor I's & O's Nurse will monitor serum potassium levels frequently.
Interactions
Decreased absorption in other oral medications. - Interactions with calcium and magnesium-containing antacids can cause an increase in alkalosis
Client Education - Explain the purpose and method of administrating medication. Adise patient to avoid taking antacids or laxatives during therapy unless it has been approved by health care provider. Use of these may cause systemic alkalosis - inform patient that there will be requent Iab tests to monitor the effectiveness of medication therapy.
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Potassium levels will decrease and be within normal limits
