Biography

Through out my career, I have thrived in unique teaching experiences that have enabled a mastery of flexibility and thinking on my toes. Although my expertise lies mainly in ELA, social studies and elementary education; I take pride in being able to adapt to and teach any subject that is thrown at me.
I have had experience with one on one and small group tutoring through many different means in my early career. However, my time on movie and tv sets as a studio teacher cemented the notion that flexibility is the most important skill a teacher can learn. On set, I had to ensure the production was adhering to child labor laws with every minor on the set. One facet of the laws was to ensure the minors had a specific amount of time for education. Teaching occurred in the 20-30 minutes between takes or while waiting for the scene the minors were in. Other times, production would send me to their hotel and we conducted school over several hours in a conference room. I have managed a room of 6 young actors and actresses, each with their own grade level and all with unique schools that I had to collaborate with.
This ability to think on my toes and make the most out of limited time helped me when I moved on to substitute teaching. At the school district I worked with, I was known to be a wonderful sub who got the daily work done. I also specialized in coming in with little to no notice in a classroom and having as smooth of a transition as I could. It didn’t matter if I wasn’t a music teacher or a STEM teacher. If that class needed covered, I would do it. The school district I worked with did not believe in “easy sub” days so I had find a way to make the lesson plans work even if the subject was not my expertise.
Recently, the ability to adapt has taken on a new meaning. Due to health concerns, I had to choose to find safer work. Currently, I am developing my own American History course for upper elementary through a company called Lernsys. Starting with a huge learning curve, I am now proficient at editing videos, working with white board animation and animation software. I have also been learning how to use adobe to bring extra creativity to my graphics in my videos.
Educational videos are really exciting and refreshing to make. I have always preferred to teach with a flair of entertainment whether that is singing directions to students or animating a skit to better demonstrate a point. These kinds of videos make it easier to do so. It has become a new passion and hobby of mine. This is why Numerade is so enticing to me.
