Biography

I am a Ph.D. Research Scientist with over 20 years experience in industry, recently relocated and now dividing my time between Canada and Panama. For the past 20 years I have also run a side business, tutoring science and math, primarily at the high school level. I enjoy working with students and have enjoyed much repeat business.
In my spare time I enjoy horseback riding, hiking, and baking.

These questions are designed to be considered by groups of students in class. Often these questions work well for introducing a particular topic in class. For the process $A(l) \rightarrow A(g),$ which direction is favored by changes in energy probability? Positional probability? Explain your answer. If you wanted to favor the process as written, would you raise or lower the temperature of the system? Explain.

You have a sample of gas in a flask with a volume of 250 mL. At $25.5^{\circ} \mathrm{C},$ the pressure of the gas is
$360 \mathrm{mm} \mathrm{Hg} .$ If you decrease the temperature to $-5.0^{\circ} \mathrm{C},$ what is the gas pressure at the lower temperature?

One of the cylinders of an automobile engine has a volume of $400 . \mathrm{cm}^{3} .$ The engine takes in air at a pressure of 1.00 atm and a temperature of $15^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ and compresses the air to a volume of $50.0 \mathrm{cm}^{3}$ at $77^{\circ} \mathrm{C} .$ What is the final pressure of the gas in the cylinder? (The ratio of before and after volumesin this case, 400: 50 or $8: 1-$ is called the compression ratio.
