The College of Wooster
Chemistry Peer Tutor

Biography

I am a rising senior at the College of Wooster, working towards a minor in chemistry. I was a peer tutor for the introductory chemistry classes (Chem 111 and 112) for two and a half semesters. This job involved meeting with up to five chemistry students once a week for one-on-one help with fundamental material, answering specific questions, and discussing study strategies.

Heating 235 g of water from $22.6^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ to $94.4^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ in a microwave oven
requires $7.06 \times 10^{4} \mathrm{J}$ of energy. If the microwave frequency is $2.88 \times 10^{10} \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ ,
how many quanta are required to supply the $7.06 \times 10^{4} \mathrm{J} ?$

Geometry

A shelter is designed to support life on the moon. The shelter is designed in the shape of a cylinder with a perfectly hemi-spherical domed roof. The radius of the shelter is 400 yd., and the height of the cylindrical portion is 30 yd.
a) Draw a diagram of the shelter.
b) If the average person occupies 0.7 m³, what is the volume of air present when there are 150 people in the shelter?
