The ions $\mathrm{H}_{2}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{3}^{+}$ have been observed in gas discharges.
a. $\mathrm{H}_{2}^{+}$ has been reported to have a bond distance of $106 \mathrm{pm}$ and a bond dissociation enthalpy of $255 \mathrm{kJ} \mathrm{mol}^{-1}$. Comparable values for the neutral molecule are $74.2 \mathrm{pm}$ and $436 \mathrm{kJ} \mathrm{mol}^{-1}$. Are these values for $\mathrm{H}_{2}^{+}$ in agreement with the molecular orbital picture of this ion? Explain.
b. Assuming $\mathrm{H}_{3}^{+}$ to be triangular (the probable geometry), describe the molecular orbitals of this ion and determine
the expected $\mathrm{H}-\mathrm{H}$ bond order.

The equilibrium constant for the formation of the cryptand $[\mathrm{Sr}\{\text { cryptand }(2.2 .1)\}]^{2+}$ is larger than the equilibrium constants for the analogous calcium and barium cryptands. Suggest an explanation. (See F. Kauffmann, J-M. Lehn, J-P. Sauvage, Helv. Chim. Acta, $1976,59,1099 .)$

Total plasma volume is important in determining the required
plasma component in blood replacement therapy for a person
undergoing surgery. Plasma volume is influenced by the overall
health and physical activity of an individual. Suppose that a
random sample of 40 male firefighters are tested and that
they have a plasma volume sample mean of x =
37.5 ml/kg (milliliters plasma per kilogram body weight).
Assume that 𝜎 = 7.60 ml/kg for the
distribution of blood plasma.
1) Find a 99% confidence interval for the population
mean blood plasma volume in male firefighters. What is the margin
of error? (Round your answers to two decimal places.)
lower limit ?
upper limit ?
margin error ?
2) What conditions are necessary for your calculations?
Select all that apply.
the distribution of weights is normal
𝜎 is known
𝜎 is unknown
the distribution of weights is uniform
n is large
3)Interpret your results in the context of this
problem.
The probability that this interval contains the true average
blood plasma volume in male firefighters is 0.99.
The probability that this interval contains the true average
blood plasma volume in male firefighters is 0.01.
We are 99% confident that the true average blood plasma volume
in male firefighters falls within this interval.
We are 1% confident that the true average blood plasma volume in
male firefighters falls within this interval.
4)Find the sample size necessary for a 99% confidence level with
maximal margin of error E = 2.60 for
the mean plasma volume in male firefighters. Round up to the
nearest whole number.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are nontoxic,
nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine, and
fluorine. They are used in the manufacture of aerosol sprays,
blowing agents for foams and packing materials, as solvents, and as
refrigerants.
1. When released into the atmosphere, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
react with UV light, producing atomic chlorine. Atomic chlorine
goes on to act as a catalyst in the destruction of ozone. Using any
resources available to you, determine how much CFCs
(chlorofluorocarbons) would need to be released into the atmosphere
to completely destroy the ozone layer.
2. CFCs were subsequently banned and alternative chemicals were
found as substitutes. What were the social and economic impacts of
switching away from CFCs?

A quantity of 0.225 g of a metal M (molar mass = 27.0 g/mol) liberated 0.303 L of molecular hydrogen (measured at 17°C and 741 mmHg) from an excess of hydrochloric acid. Deduce from these data the corresponding equation and write the formulas for the oxide and sulfate of M.
Using the smallest whole-number coefficients, write the balanced equation for the reaction of the metal, M, with hydrochloric acid. Include the phase abbreviations.
What is the formula of the oxide M? What is the formula of the sulfate of M?
