Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) can cure AIDS, Ebola, cancer, and malaria. Or at least that's what the website tells potential customers. The inventor and chief advocate of the product is Jim Humble. There is little evidence to support the fact that MMS does anything to patients aside from making them feel worse than they did before they tried it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is typical in its conclusions about the so-called miracle drug. The FDA identifies it as 28 percent sodium chlorite, which, when mixed with an acid (as recommended), produces a potent form of bleach. The product's labels suggest high oral doses for the minimum effect. The FDA states that the oral doses will produce nothing but nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and diarrhea. Humble claims to have "treated" 100,000 patients in Mexico and other parts of the world. It is also clear that MMS has been used on pancreatic and lung cancer patients in developing countries. In the UK, for example, a support group reports those selling MMS to relevant authorities. Meanwhile, Humble and those who believe in MMS dispense it to patients around the world. In New Zealand, around 2,000 patients have been sold the product, and the Australian Medical Association reports that 10 people have been poisoned by MMS over the past five years.

Discuss the ethical issues surrounding unproven products such as MMS. Do you think that these products should be banned before independent assessment?

Discuss the impact of unethical and unfounded product claims such as these on those in the developing world desperate to be cured of fatal diseases.

Learning Task 2: Think/Recall a controversial issue or news that has been featured in print, broadcast, and new media. Compare and contrast how this issue or news is presented. Explain which is the best way to present the news/issue. Complete the matrix with (1) the title of the news or issue and (2) its source. (Note: one news/issue only presented in the different types of media)

News/issue
Source
How the issue/news is presented in the types of media
Example: Extrajudicial Killing
News paper
Headlines in newspaper with pictures of brutal killings
TV
News headlines with actual video footage of the brutal killings
Internet: GMA news.com
Presented both with pictures and video coverage

The best way of presenting the news is through broadcast media because aside from the actual video footage, news is presented in TV where we can acquire news freely.

Learning Task 3: Make an infographic showing how different media affect and impact your everyday life. Your output will be evaluated using the rubric below. (Options in output submission: Google classroom, google drive to be provided by the teacher, printed)

What is the type of reflex represented by the pathway that includes A, D, and C?
A scheme of the basic motor reflex pathways contains a section of the spinal cord, fibers, and a muscle that receives the initial stimulus. Letter 'A' indicates a fiber carrying a signal from the muscle through the nerve node to the posterior wing of the butterfly-shaped structure where it splits into two branches, one of which meets a short fiber. Letter B indicates a long fiber that meets the signal from fiber 'A' and carries it to the muscle. A meeting point of two fibers within the butterfly-shaped structure is labeled with a plus sign. Letter C indicates a fiber that meets a short fiber within the butterfly-shaped structure and carries it to the muscle. A meeting point of fiber 'A' and the short fiber is labeled with a plus sign. A meeting point of the short fiber and fiber C is labeled with a minus sign. Letter E indicates the part of the muscle from which fiber 'A' starts and fiber B ends. Letter F indicates a spindle-like structure from which fiber 'A' starts. It is twisted around muscle fibers. Letter G refers to the part of the muscle where fiber C ends.
flexor reflex
stretch reflex
cross-extension reflex

The Spring 2024 semester at Diablo Valley College (DVC) was a whirlwind of experiences. I enrolled in a variety of courses, including Calculus, English Literature, and Environmental Science. Each course presented its own unique challenges and rewards. Calculus was particularly challenging, but it was also the most rewarding when I finally understood a complex concept. In addition to my courses, I also participated in several activities and clubs. I joined the Debate Club, which helped me improve my public speaking and critical thinking skills. I also attended several events, such as the Spring Festival and the annual Science Fair. These events allowed me to interact with my peers outside of a classroom setting and create lasting memories.

Outside of DVC, my life was equally busy. I balanced my academic responsibilities with my part-time job at a local bookstore. My family was supportive throughout the semester, providing encouragement during stressful periods. We also made time for fun, such as our weekend trips to the local park or our movie nights at home. During the Spring Break, I took a much-needed vacation to Yosemite National Park. The natural beauty of the park was a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of college life. I spent my days hiking and exploring, and my nights camping under the stars. Overall, the Spring 2024 semester was a challenging but rewarding experience. I learned a lot, not just academically, but also about myself and my capabilities. I look forward to what the next semester will bring.
